The Betrayal by Technology

Jacques Ellul was a French theologian/sociologist and anarchist. He first became well-known to American readers when his book The Technological Society was published in English in 1964.This book leveled a broad critique of technique, a term that means more than gadgets and machines – as the English word technology means. For Ellul, technique represented an entire way of life characterized by life fragmented so that efficiency ultimately rules over all ethical decisions.Ellul warned that technique was having drastic effects on all aspects of modern life. His books, Anarchy and ChristianityThe Politics of God and the Politics of Man are two examples of how his political and religious outlooks mutually reinforced one another. Many Green Anarchists have cited Ellul’s work on technique as influential on their thought. Surviving a Car Crash Part 1 of 4

MercedesCrashtest500x2193

More than a million people die around the world in car accidents each year but experts in the industry now believe fatal smashes could be eliminated. Some hope there could be an end to car crashes altogether.Accidents can be caused by a multitude of reasons, but human error is at the heart of them. Drivers go too fast for the weather conditions, make unwise decisions and fail to notice or anticipate potential hazards. But what if the car could help the errant driver?Scientists and engineers are developing technology and enhancements to cars that would aid drivers to the extent that crashes would become rarer events. Bad weather conditions and poor judgement would be mitigated by the car itself. Drivers, passengers, cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists could one day be protected from bad driving.Sophisticated technology is also being mapped out to ensure drivers and passengers can survive even catastrophic accidents. Scientists at CERN

cernLHC

Matthew Stadlen spends the day at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva, with accelerator physicist Steve Myers. The LHC has been in the limelight recently with the first tantalizing hints concerning the Higgs boson. But there’s more to physics at the LHC. Two of the LHC experiments have recently made discoveries in other areas of particle physics. In November the LHCb experiment reported a new effect in the decays of particles containing a charm quark (or antiquark). The result could be the first evidence for CP violation  - a tiny difference in the behaviour of matter and antimatter – in charmed particles. The effect is very small, but more data should reveal whether it points to physics beyond the Standard Model. In December the ATLAS experiment announced the discovery of a new “quarkonium state”, containing a beauty quark bound with its antiquark. Predicted by theory, it is known as the χb(3P). The new state will help in understanding the force that binds quarks (and antiquarks) together. Read more »
